Have you read anything by Neal Stephenson? He was a software developer before he turned full-time writer.
I don't think I've read anything by him. Of course, prior occupation doesn't always say much about whether or not I like someone's writing, but I'll have to look him up.
I hear that Analog and Asimov's are the top magazines for short sci fi. They've been around since before the fifties.
