I love this picture! The glint of bees is so beautiful. :) So, will you or your wife be posting about harvesting honey someday? Cause that would be awesome.

Yes, we'll certainly post about harvesting honey when the time comes. It'll be a fun experience.

Nice! I'm working on Jessica to get a hive. The biggest problem is we need to check allergies. Any problem with mowing the lawn right next to them? What variety of bees did you go with?

We haven't had any problems with the bees, mowing or otherwise. They're actually amazingly laid-back as a general rule.

It's our understanding that the only time they get protective is when you're actively harvesting honey from their hive, which is understandable. :)

I believe they're Italian bees.

That's good to hear that mowing doesn't upset them-- I'd think the vibration and noise would rile them up.

I was thinking of starting with Caronian-- less honey, more likely to swarm but better over-wintering, more gentle, better at building comb. Italian is more common (as honey is often the first reason).

Do you have an extractor or knows someone who does?

We have a little bit of gear, and my wife and sister are involved with a (somewhat) local bee organization that you can rent all the gear you need from for cheap. There's probably a similar organization near you.
